Mathew Belear hails from the Belleville, Ontario area, where he spent his formative years. Upon graduating from high school, he enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces, completing his training with distinction. Assigned to the 1st Battalion Royal Canadian Regiment, he embarked on his first deployment to Afghanistan in 2005, followed by a return in August 2006. During his second deployment, Mathew, holding the rank of Corporal, sustained severe injuries in an ambush by the Taliban during Operation Medusa.
Following extensive treatment in Kandahar and Germany, he returned home to commence his physical and mental rehabilitation journey. After two years of dedicated physiotherapy, Mathew transitioned to a new role, joining the Ontario Provincial Police.
In October 2018, he proudly represented his country at the Invictus Games in Australia, securing a Bronze Medal in Archery. His dedication to serving his nation and the province of Ontario is unwavering.
Mathew’s life experiences have shaped his character profoundly, yet he remains deeply humble when given the opportunity to share his story, offering solace and inspiration to those facing similar challenges. In August 2023, Mathew embarked on a new chapter, joining Foresight Sports Canada as the National Coordinator for Operation ForeVets, a program offering preferential pricing to military personnel and their families. Additionally, he obtained certification as a golf teaching professional, combining his passion for the sport with his unwavering commitment to assisting others.
Throughout his journey, volunteering and aiding those in need have remained central to Mathew’s ethos, driven by his experiences as a competitive athlete and his enduring desire to make a positive impact.
